APIIT UCTI 1st Inter College Danze2Nista Review

I am a very, very huge fan of So You Think You Can Dance! I know the winners of each season and I’ve watched every movie known to mankind which involves dancing. What I am trying to say is I just love everything that has to do with dancing. Thanks to the Dance Club in APIIT/UCTI who came up with the first ever Danze2Nista which is an inter-college online and reality dance tournament, I got a chance to see the best college dancers live!

It was a dark night that night. Not that it was raining but it was a Halloween themed event. They had what I would call ‘Mascots’ who really made the event what it was-SPOOKY!! It started off when all the lights went dim and there was a mini light show.

Then, the music went off as well as the lights and it was dark and silent. Suddenly, music came on and there, standing in the middle of the stage with the spotlight shining on him was Two-Face! Next thing you know, he was modeling!

Giving a few poses to the song “Fashionista” by Jimmy James. It was totally weird!

After that, another mascot came on stage to model. It was the sad geisha. When people looked at her, they felt really sad for her. The make-up was so incredible it made the geisha look really sad at all times. Well, I too felt sad when I saw the make-up. It seems to have that effect on everyone. The worst part was, I had to act the part. Astonished? Well, you see, I was the sad geisha on stage.

The whole night I had to walk amongst the guests looking and acting sad to entertain them. I knew I pulled it off because no one in college could recognize me throughout the event. It wasn’t just because my face was painted, they just could not figure out who the sad geisha was because of the way I acted my role. You see, everyone in college knew me to be the cheerful, bubbly, talkative girl who just can’t keep her mouth shut! But that night, I wanted to make my character come to life so I kept quiet the whole time with the perfect body language to top it off. It was really hard I tell you! At the end of the night, I really did feel like I was depressed and thought I had to go for therapy sessions to recover my true form again. But I got back to my old self after a few minutes. Haha!

Anyway, I have to say the scariest mascots were the two masters of ceremony. The female MC was a demonic diva whose face was painted a much scarier version of the character Jack Skellington in “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. For the male MC, he was the wicked jester. There was painted blood dripping from his mouth. Let me tell you this, if kids felt scared of clowns after watching the movie ”It”, adults were afraid of jesters after seeing him.

The whole night, students from colleges all over KL showed off their talents and passion for music and dancing. I was shocked to see how well everyone performed. There were hip hop, break dancing, the Cha Cha and Cookie Monster. Yes, you read it right-COOKIE MONSTER! There was a group called Cookie Monster and they had on cookie monster t-shirts. They were so adorable!!

There was even a friend of mine who joined the competition. She is really shy in real life but I was just stunned at how well she could shake her booty like Beyonce on stage.

Some of the performances were just mind blowing! For example, the winning group, A Crew, their hip hop and break-dance moves were choreographed and performed so brilliantly, it actually made the sad geisha smile with excitement.

The first runner up was a Kazakhstan couple who danced the Cha Cha. The moves that girl had plus the super sexy dress she don made the guys mouths agape. I swear, They were drooling!

Besides that, there was an online dance competition where students battled their way through in Super Dancer Online (XDO). I used to think computer games are easy to play but watching the participants move their fingers at the speed of light (If compared to the way I play) trying to outdo each other in the game made me realize that it was not an easy feat. If it was me, my hands would have been sore!
One thing I would like to add is the decoration done. APIIT/UCTI is a very small college yet, the organizers utilized every single space extremely well. The area where the cafeteria used to be was turned into a The Lounge and a clubbers spot. The whole area was dark with only UV lights lighting up the place with a faint blue glow and a DJ spinning at the clubbers spot where laser lights were flashing all over the whole night to entertain everyone at the lounge.

Lastly, which is my most favourite part of all was when one of the judges,

Fellest Yan gave a performance before announcing the winners of the online and reality dance competition. He rocked the stage! The man was not only a marvelous dancer, he was also hot! My heart melted more and more with every move he made. There was only one word to describe it-YUMMY!

At the end of the night, even though some of the participants went home with minor cuts and bruises yet, everyone went home with a happy heart. It was an exhilarating experience and I can’t wait for it next year!

Breakdance is a style of hip hop which also known as b-boying, b-girling or breaking which are mostly dance by the teenagers this days. Break dancing is a combination dance of different styles as well as flexibility to make up a dance move. Most of the break dancers have created moves which require most of the upper body strength. Other than that, music is also an important element as it plays one of the most important parts in break dancing. Essentially there are many types of break dance moves. Among the most popular moves are toprock, air flares, headspins, dizzy run, applejack, windmills, swipe, suicides and handglide. Do not worry what are those dance move names listed above, we will show you more during the workshop!

Break dancing right up till today is a very commonly used dance move; you could see them on the street by the street dancers, clubs perhaps and movies. Among the movies uses break dance movements are “You Got Served”, “Save the Last Dance”, “Step Up”, “Step Up 2” and many more. These movies are very popular today because of their incredible dance moves as well as good combination of music in the movie. Well combination of dance moves and music creates masterpiece dance. We all know if the both this element are combined perfectly, everyone would remember them and some may keen to learn their movements too.

APIIT UCTI Cheer Audition 2008

Welcome to APIIT UCTI’s ever first Cheerleading squad! Before that, let’s briefly understand what is cheerleading. Actually cheerleading itself is a type of sport, where there will be different types of dances and movements which require a lot of physical actions. Most cheerleading can be seen in the elementary and high schools during the sports day or any special functions including colleges, or probably during any events where the cheerleaders are invited to cheer. A little history on ‘what is cheerleading’, cheerleading began in the 1880s in the United States when there were sports games held by the universities, shout out to cheer to support the teams or squads. Then, the cheerleading squad was formed due to the cheer! Initially, the cheerleader started with all male cheers not till in 1920s, the women started joining the cheer. Not long by then, the cheerleading started having uniforms for their own squad. Different squad has different uniforms with different designs as well as colors representing their squad. After that, every squad came out with their very own squad name to avoid confusion with other squads.

All right, not too much stories on explaining and introducing what is cheerleading. APIIT UCTI is not only gonna have a normal cheer squad but most likely a street type of cheer. We will not be following all of the cheerleading’s rules and regulations but we’ll be more flexible towards the rules and regulations! Do not worry much of the rules, as you come for our audition, we will brief the candidate more of our cheer squad.

Guys and gals, we’re now searching for the right candidate to join our very first APIIT UCTI’s cheerleading squad! Audition will be held on the 16th May and the 23rd May 2008. Whomever who is interested may come for the audition.

The minimum requirements for our cheer candidate are:
a) Candidate must be able to move accordingly to the music
b) Candidate must work in a team, not individually
c) Candidate has to attend all the practice(s)
d) Candidate should a bit of experience or skills of acting

What are the benefits of becoming a cheer in our APIIT UCTI squad?
- You will be noticed by everyone, attention will be focused to the cheer when the squad performed
- FREE entries to many big events (STRICTLY for APIIT UCTI squad ONLY)
- Contract with APIIT UCTI Cheer for 1 year
- Absolutely FREE cheer camp by APIIT UCTI Dance Club

Come for the audition on the day stated above and we’ll see you there! It is a very good opportunity for every one of you all to try out in the audition to join our squad. There is nothing to lose here, but you may gain experiences to those who had never joined the cheerleading before. There is no fee requiring for the audition, just walk-in and we will decide are you the one or not, show us what you have to join our very first APIIT UCTI Cheer Squad 2008! You may not know if you do not try, you may be the one when you have tried!

Please Dont Stop The Music

Ballroom Dances

Ballroom dance is also known as social dance because it encourages social interaction between dance partners.

Ballroom can be divided by 2 category that is Standard division and Latin division:-

Standard -- Waltz , Tango , Viennese Waltz , Foxtrot , Quickstep
Latin -- Cha Cha , Samba , Rumba , Paso Doble , Jive

Waltz
The American Style Waltz involves breaking contact almost entirely in some figures. For example, the Syncopated Side-by-Side with Spin includes a free spin for both partners. Open rolls are another good example of an open dance figure, in which the secondary partner alternates between the primary partner's left and right sides, with the primary partner's left or right arm (alone) providing the lead.
In contemporary ballroom dance, the fast versions of the waltz are called Viennese Waltz.
Country Western Waltz is 99% progressive, moving counter clock wise around the dance floor. Both the posture and frame are relaxed, with posture bordering on a slouch. The exaggerated hand and arm gestures of some ballroom styles are not part of this style. Couples may frequently dance in the promenade position, depending on local preferences.

Cha Cha
There are three flavors of Cha-cha-cha dance, differing by the place of the chachacha chasse with respect to the musical bar. Ballroom Cha-cha and street Cha-cha-cha in Cuba count "two-three-chachacha". Country/western Cha-cha-cha and Latin street Cha-cha-cha in many places other than Cuba count "one-two-chachacha" or "chachacha-three-four".
In general Cha cha steps should be kept compact and the dance is danced generally without any rise and fall.
Cha Cha is either danced to authentic Latin music, or more contemporary Latin Pop or Latin Rock. The music for the ballroom Cha-cha-cha is energetic and with a steady beat. The "Latin" cha-cha-cha is slower, more sensual and may involve complicated rhythms. "Cowboy" Cha-Cha-Cha is danced basically to any "four to the floor" music; in addition there are a number of C/W novelty dances with the names that include "cha-cha-cha".

Samba
There are many versions of the Samba - Mesemba, Carioca, a Baion, a Batucado, Conga, Carnivale and so on. Each is similar with the difference mostly in the tempo played and variation in the technique. The variety of Samba taught in North American and European ballrooms tends to be waltz like - smoothly moving around the floor with a steady bounce.
Basic steps of samba- The Lady facing the man, will perform steps complimenting his. So if the man moves his left foot forward, the lady will move her right foot back and visa versa. This is very sensible. Otherwise, the man would probably tread on her!

Rumba
The distinctive hip movement of Rumba, called the Cuban Motion, is one of the most important elements of this dance. Introduced in the Rumba, it is an important styling element in a number of popular Latin American Dances.
Rumba music is usually written in 4/4 time and may be played over a wide variety of tempos. Often in rumba music there may be an underlying pulsation of & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4. The basic Rumba dance steps are counted Slow, Quick, Quick (SQQ)

Jive
The Jive Dance was first popular in the 1940's. The Jive was originally the European's (U.K.) version of the American Jitterbug and/ or East Coast Swing
The dance is taught with no footwork, just a walking of the patterns which can be many. The names of modern Jive usually come from the club or association that taught the version being done and usually leads into a more structured form of swing dance as time goes on.

Salsa
The word Salsa today is used to describe the music and the dance, a modern term for Latin if you will. However the dance known as Salsa is really just a slowed down MUTATED Mambo. As Tito Puente has said, "Salsa is what you eat". Mambo is again gaining much popularity today (2002) with a little more pop or disco beat, not to mention the likes of Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Lou Bega, etc. helping it along.

Paso Doble
Paso Doble originates from Spain. It developed on the basis of movements performed by the matadors during the bull fights.
In Paso Doble the man (matador) is in focus more than in any other dance. The lady is left with playing a role of a cape ("cappa") the red canvas of the toreador or a bull, depending on circumstances.
The dance came into fashion around 1920.
It is probably the last dance you will learn if you take up Latin American dance classes. That's because it is based around previously agreed choreography (arranged precisely to the music) and it is far more difficult to lead and improvise it.
